What we still don’t know is the mechanism that connects EBV infection, which happens in most people, to the development of MS, which only happens in some people. We have long suspected that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) plays a critical role in the development of MS, and a recent study from Harvard adds substantial data to support the EBV hypothesis. Harris: Understanding the cause of MS has been a central and unanswered question in MS research. MHE: Please explain the connection between Epstein-Barr virus and MS. Understanding what population of CD20-containing cells are being targeted by anti-CD20 therapy and how they contribute to MS is essential to better characterize disease onset and progression. New research seems to suggest that the interaction between B-cells and T-cells is required for the origin of CD20+ T-cells, which along with the antigen-presenting activity of B-cells, play an important role in MS disease. CD20 is mostly present in B-cells however, a population of CD20-containing T-cells has been acknowledged for some time, and these are present in higher numbers in MS patients. Harris: Recent clinical success with anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody therapy (ocrelizumab, rituximab) as a highly effective treatment for MS has shifted the focus of MS research to CD20-expressing cells. MHE: Which other MS treatments and research are you excited about? Given the rapidly-advancing stem cell research and associated technology, I assume more and more companies will start to enter this field to address this unmet need in MS. Altogether, this slows the pace of translation, despite the very exciting stem cell research that continues to be conducted around the world. I am less familiar with the commercial space for cell therapy in MS, but it is most likely hindered by the high cost of treatment, lack of standardization, and regulatory hurdles associated with biological licensing. Good phase 2 data is complicated by the fact that MS is a heterogenous disease, and we lack good clinical outcomes or surrogate markers for progressive MS. Very few phase 2 studies have been conducted, so we really need more data from larger trials to show efficacy. Regarding mesenchymal stem cell-based therapies, multiple early-stage clinical studies have been performed with encouraging data but small sample sizes. Harris: Translation of stem cell technology to patients with MS has been frustratingly slow. Are there already commercial applications? MHE: Describe the progress in stem cell research globally and the implications for treating MS. In line with the goal of treatment optimization, we are particularly excited about our biomarker research, which would allow us to predict which patients are most likely to respond to cell therapy based on their biomarker profile. Our goal is to optimize cell therapy for progressive MS patients, which may require higher doses in some patients in order to achieve clinical benefit. We are currently completing the final stages of the trial and anticipate a full data analysis completed by the end of this year.īased on the preliminary analysis, we are starting discussions with the FDA to explore whether a dose escalation trial is warranted for the more disabled patients who did not respond to stem cell treatment. While we did observe encouraging trends of improvement in patients treated with stem cells, it must be emphasized that a full data analysis with comparison with the placebo arm remains to be completed to determine whether trends in efficacy are statistically significant. Harris: We are conducting a phase 2 double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial testing the efficacy of autologous mesenchymal stem cell neural progenitors (MSC-NPs) administered into the spinal fluid (intrathecally) of patients with SPMS and PPMS. MHE: Please discuss the significance of the Center’s interim stem cell treatment trials, and the next steps in this research. Harris not only discussed the stem cell treatment research, but also other promising MS discoveries. Managed Healthcare Executive® spoke with Violaine Harris, Ph.D., a senior research scientist with Tisch MS Research Center of New York who is also closely involved with the stem cell treatment study.

It is slow, sadly, but you only have to do it once.īitTorrent Sync has a ‘relay service’. Much better to delete all of one side and sync it across. You’ll end up with all files from both sides on both sides, and/or a bunch of conflicts, where you just expected nothing to happen. When you’re starting out with say, your Documents folder, don’t try to sync two complete versions of the folder. It is not the complete solution.) Therefore, I have some advice on how to make BitTorrent Sync work without too much pain or unexpected data loss. It cannot be fully and correctly solved without massively overhauling how applications deal with data. Sold.įile sync is a really tricky problem. Zero-interaction LAN file sync between machines. So BitTorrent Sync is a thing, which is basically what I dreamed of when I started SyncDroid. No, I will not use it until I can audit it and compile it myself.) Dropbox is not a good option due to the proud tradition of Crap Australian Internet, and besides, security and cloud services do not mix. Time passed some more, and I find myself at the same desk for three days of the week, with a really nice desktop and another very nice but just-not-quite-as-beefy laptop. I ceased having a consistent desk and became completely dependent on my laptop, which got much bigger to compensate for having to do everything and at the same time only slightly physically heavier thanks to the wonders of technology. Time passed, and I got busy with other things. I wrote some blog posts to explain my thinking. So I started writing a program called SyncDroid (no relation to the Android app) to do file-sync-over-LAN. I thought, wouldn’t it be wonderful if my files could be the same on both sides? And if it could do that automatically, without me asking. Once upon a time, before Dropbox was a thing, I had a big desktop and a small laptop. A touch-based OS requires drastically different interactions than a mouse/keyboard paradigm. You quickly find out why Apple didn’t simply port Mac OS X as-is to the iPad. On the iOS side, you are taking a touch screen device and making it work with a desktop OS. Both devices use a mouse and keyboard, so it’s fairly easy to implement that. On the Mac side, using a remote machine feels extremely normal. There is a dedicated Screenshot button, options to send/receive the clipboard, an option to scale down the display when network conditions are not optimal, and the ability to manage multiple displays if they are available. Once you are logged into a machine, you are free to use it like you would just sitting in front of it. Double tapping/clicking on a machine launches it and either logs you in or prompts you for the passcode depending on how the security of that machine is setup. The apps look for available machines on the local network, and also shows you the ones available with Screens Connect (more on that later). The iPhone and Mac apps share a lot of similar buttons and layout functions, so users of both apps can swap back and forth without having to re-learn workflows. Both apps received quick updates for the new iOS 7 design a couple years back. Screens has stayed current, following Apple’s ever-changing design standards. Screens is using industry-standard technology, but with an easy-to-use and beautiful user interface. The client generally connects to the server from port 5900 and allows the client to see the display of the VNC server. You have the VNC server (typically a laptop, server, or desktop) and the VNC client (another laptop, desktop, or mobile device). The original VNC source code is now open source. The lab was later purchased by AT&T, but shut down in 2002. It was created by The Olivetti & Oracle Research Lab back in the late 90s. VNC stands for virtual networking computing. Accessing a Mac remotely allows you to run desktop applications, have access to a full web browser from iOS, and access files and programs that are only on that one machine. I use remote access to manage a Mac mini at Mac mini colo and my Plex server at home. Accessing a PDF file using PDF Expert that is stored in Dropbox is certainly better than remotely controlling a Mac and opening the document. There are countless ways to sync documents and access them from anywhere. With the rise of services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and iCloud, remote access services aren’t necessary for simply accessing files remotely. The iOS and Mac apps are free, but the service is prohibitively expensive for most users.įree Productivity Guide: Download our simple guide to productivity to help you improve your workflows and be more focused with your time and attention. If your machine is behind a corporate network that prohibits Screens from working remotely, we recommend LogMeIn. This removes the requirement to use a static IP address or configure your router manually. It uses industry-standard technology for remote access (VNC), but the free Screens Connect service makes it easy to setup. Screens for Mac and iOS is the best remote access solution for accessing our Macs when away from home. (In a tangerine, vitamin C is half as much as in an orange.)īoth fruits are good sources of vitamins and minerals, including thiamin, folate and potassium. Tangerines contain more vitamin A than oranges, though oranges are lower in calories (an orange contains 47 calories while a, in a similarly sized tangerine, calories come out to 53) and higher in vitamin C and fiber. Both fruits are made up mostly of carbs (there are about 13 carbs in a tangerine and 12 carbs in an orange), are high in water and contain almost no fat. Tangerine health benefits are very similar to orange health benefits. While both tangerines and oranges are thin-skinned, the tangerine’s rind is looser and easier to peel, making it a perfect take-along snack.Īre Tangerines Good For You Like Oranges? The flavors or both fruits vary depending on the variety, but in general, tangerines are stronger in flavor than oranges, with a sweeter, less tangy taste. Tangerines are a dark reddish orange, while oranges typically a yellow-orange shade (blood oranges excepted). Both fruits are orange, but the shades vary. Tangerines are softer to the touch when fully ripened, while ripe oranges are usually firm and heavy. Tangerines are smaller than oranges and slightly flattened. However, as a rule of thumb, oranges tend to be larger and rounder than tangerines. Oranges come in different sizes and slightly different shapes, depending on the variety. Though they are similar in appearance, there are a number of ways you can tell the difference between a tangerine and an orange: A Satsuma tangerine and clementine tangerine also refers to varieties of mandarin that are not tangerines at all (though they are often marketed as such in the US and elsewhere due to their similarities to tangerines). The fruit referred to as Halo tangerines are a mandarin brand name. While all tangerines are mandarins, however, not all mandarins are tangerines. Oranges are a hybrid of mandarins and pomelos, while tangerines are a subgroup of mandarins. tangerina species, while oranges are the fruit of the X. Like oranges, tangerines are members of the citrus family, but they are the fruit of the C. Some people refer to a tangerine as a “tangerine orange” (probably because of their similar appearance), but oranges originated many years ago in Asia while tangerines were first grown in Florida (tangerines got their name because they were imported through the city of Tangier in Morocco during the 1800s). The difference between orange and tangerine begins with their origins. While both are members of the citrus family and look similar to one another, they are actually two different species of fruit. It can be easy to confuse a tangerine fruit for an orange at first glance, but on closer examination these two fruits (while closely related) actually have several key differences. It’s an orange! No, wait…it’s a tangerine! Well, which is it? It’s round, orange, sweet, nutritious and has a fresh, citrusy scent. It cut down pie making time and hassle by a noticeable amount. This is definitely one kitchen toy which is going to get a hammering in our household. The instruction manual also contains a good selection of recipes most of which are extremely easy. Obviously you can use the Pie Magic for both savoury and sweet pies, and you can also use it for reheating pies. However, because the Pie Magic closes on the pie you won’t get a puffed up top like you do in the oven – so next time we use it I’m going to try to convince Andy to use shortcrust for the top too. We used home made shortcrust pastry on the bottom and bought puff pastry on top. When it came to getting the pie out Andy was worried that the lid would come off (see, I said he took pies seriously) but the broad spatula and a bit of patience meant that the pie slid out and on to a plate easily and in one piece. The pastry was all cooked and the filling was piping hot. As you can see – no problems with colour at all. We actually waited 20 minutes, because our pie mixture had come straight from the fridge, and because of concerns about the colour of the top. He was also complaining about the lack of egg wash – would the pie be golden? Just shut the Pie Magic and wait 15 to 18 minutes.Īndy was a bit sceptical at this point – the lid didn’t look like it was going to be big enough to create a decent seal. Not required: water to create the seal, egg wash, hand crimping. Carefully line the base, fill with cooled pie filling, and put on the lid. You do, however, need to get it heated up before you start putting your pastry in. Which way round is marked.īase – perfectly sized, with slits to ensure it fits the pie maker snuglyīeing non stick everything, there’s no need to grease the Pie Magic. One side cuts the pastry for the base, including slits so that it fits nicely. The pastry cutter is one of those simple things that probably took a fair bit of thought to get right. It comes with a big spatula for getting your pie out and also a pastry cutter. Naturally, there’s a cord tidy, so it’s also easy to store. It’s a bit bigger than your average toastie machine, so it doesn’t take up too much space. The Pie Magic Family makes a single, family size pie. When I read that the Pie Magic was going to deliver me pie in 15-20 minutes that was when I thought we might be on to something. And even then, I confess, often the pastry on the bottom is a little soggy. You have to preheat the oven and we find the pie spends a good 40 minutes minimum cooking. My main complaint with this process is the time and energy that it takes. I know you can buy pie tin(s) and make pies in your oven. That was actually also the response I got when I posted a photo of my newly arrived Pie Magic to Twitter/ Instagram. At the age of 20 (ish) you see a pie maker and think “who the hell needs that?”. I started in “small electrical” (before graduating to hi-fi) so I have seen (and quite possibly owned) every kitchen gadget under the sun. Now – once upon a time, I worked as a sales assistant in the electrical department of a major department store. So when Sunbeam asked me if I’d like to try one of their new additions to the Pie Magic range, I figured that domestic harmony demanded the answer be yes. He holds very strong opinions about pies too – mostly around how much pastry has to be involved (bottom and top). Like all good northern men, Andy is really into pies. Disclaimer: Sunbeam sent me a Pie Magic Family pie maker to test out. Three different nozzles for different modes of printing. Stuart Blackton popularized stop-motion and reportedly inspired Émile Cohl to create Fantasmagorie (1908), regarded as the oldest known example of a complete traditional (hand-drawn) animation on standard cinematographic film. The successful short The Haunted Hotel (1907) by J. It took years before animation found its way to the cinemas. When cinematography eventually broke through in the 1890s, the wonder of the realistic details in the new medium was seen as its biggest accomplishment. Electronic automata were popularized by Disney as animatronics. The mechanical manipulation of three-dimensional puppets and objects to emulate living beings has a very long history in automata. The physical movement of image parts through simple mechanics-for instance, moving images in magic lantern shows-can also be considered animation. In addition to short films, feature films, television series, animated GIFs, and other media dedicated to the display of moving images, animation is also prevalent in video games, motion graphics, user interfaces, and visual effects. For display on computers, technology such as the animated GIF and Flash animation were developed. Television and video are popular electronic animation media that originally were analog and now operate digitally. While animators traditionally used to draw each part of the movements and changes of figures on transparent cels that could be moved over a separate background, computer animation is usually based on programming paths between key frames to maneuver digitally created figures throughout a digitally created environment.Īnalog mechanical animation media that rely on the rapid display of sequential images include the phénakisticope, zoetrope, flip book, praxinoscope, and film. The illusion of motion caused by a rapid succession of images that minimally differ from each other, with unnoticeable interruptions, is a stroboscopic effect. The illusion of animation-as in motion pictures in general-has traditionally been attributed to the persistence of vision and later to the phi phenomenon and beta movement, but the exact neurological causes are still uncertain. cats and mice, coyotes and birds), the action often centers on violent pratfalls such as falls, collisions, and explosions that would be lethal in real life. Especially with animals that form a natural predator/prey relationship (e.g. The style takes inspiration from comic strips, often featuring anthropomorphic animals, superheroes, or the adventures of human protagonists. Computer animation can be very detailed 3D animation, while 2D computer animation (which may have the look of traditional animation) can be used for stylistic reasons, low bandwidth, or faster real-time renderings. Today, many animations are made with computer-generated imagery (CGI). In traditional animation, images are drawn or painted by hand on transparent celluloid sheets to be photographed and exhibited on film. This animation moves at 10 frames per second.Īnimation is a method by which still figures are manipulated to appear as moving images.
